Carpobrotus removal day at Tavolara

February 2 was dedicated to the eradication of Carpobrotus sp. from the beach at Spalmatore di Terra on the island of Tavolara. This is a highly invasive plant, originally from South Africa, and is widely used as an ornamental in private gardens and public green spaces. It forms large stands and chokes out characteristic dune and beach species. As recommended by the European Union, it should be eradicated. The areas freed Carpobrotus sp will once again host the rare and fragile plant species typical of Sardinian beach dunes.
